Miyagawa Morning Market
Day 3 will be spent strolling around Takayama city. First, a visit to “Miyagawa Morning Market,” one of Japan’s 3 great morning markets. Rows of white tents along the Miyagawa River sell a variety of goods, such as traditional Hida Takayama foodstuffs and pickles, flowers, and folk art.
There are also shops where you can get coffee and sweets to go, and you can enjoy walking and eating as you search for souvenirs.
Hida Takayama Yoshima Farm, which handles vegetables grown organically, without pesticides, and additive-free processed food. Some of their fans visit here every month.
Pesticide-free vegetables bottled within an hour of being picked. Our hotel’s gift shop also sells this vegetable oil paste.
Encountering freshly-picked produce at the morning market is what makes it “the local kitchen.” And there are samples of the fruit for you to try.
“Fujimiya” is a dango specialty shop that has done business for two generations by the Kajibashi Bridge spanning the Miyagawa River. They offer Takayama favorites mitarashi-dango and goheimochi freshly-cooked.
8:30
Strolling around Old Town
The signs and noren curtains of long-standing shops line tasteful streets styled after those of Kyoto by Nagachika Kanamori, first lord of the Takayama clan.
Three streets in Kamimachi and Shimomachi, built in those days as a merchant ward, are now called “Old Town,” which is one of Takayama city’s great tourist spots.
To Kami-sannomachi, where there are rows of Kyoto-style townhouses with red color lattice
9:30
National important cultural propertyKusakabe Folk Museum
The mansion of Kusakabe family, who prospered as a purveyor to the government in the Edo Period, displays the household goods and folk art of that era. A national important cultural property, the house, with its strong beams and pillars, is well worth seeing. At the rest area, the manager also provides free green tea and rice crackers.
Latticed bay windows and latticework, woodwork painted with the dark brown of red iron oxide mixed with soot, a façade that captures the essence of Edo Period house-building.
Ceramics, dyed and woven textiles, lacquerware, woodwork, Japanese paper, glassware—the attached shop sells tools and implements you’ll enjoy using in everyday life.

11:00
Local caféTeahouse Fukyuan
About 300 meters south on the street with the Kusakabe Folk Museum, there stands a shop well known to some in an alley off to the east—Teahouse Fukyuan.
Opened in part of what was constructed as a salon for the owner of a kimono shop, they offer a sweetness that’s easy on the body, using arrowroot, rice flour, and bracken starch.
Two very popular items are the “Fukyu Parfait” using plenty of Japanese soy beans, soy milk, and sesame, and the gently sweet, fluffy “Okome Pancake,” using 100% rice flour and Hida amazake as a base.
As soon as you set foot in the shop, there are a variety of seats around the dazzling green courtyard, so it doesn’t even look like the same building. If it’s a time when there’s enough seating, you can take your pick of seats from the purely Japanese style tatami room, a table seat with a view of the garden, or a sofa in the “Taisho Roman” style.
There are also plenty of architectural charm, such as the distorted “yugami glass,” or the “sukashi glass” with a flower pattern.
The immaculately maintained courtyard is a soothing place with the gentle light shining in.

Japanese sweets shop and souvenirsTohoen
The shopping district is about 1 minute on foot from Miyakawa, heading toward Takayama Station. A wooden sign penned with powerful strokes and the white shop curtain are the hallmarks of the Japanese sweets and gift shop.
The flagship product is Maneki Neko manju—steamed buns inspired by the cats that live in the alley.
Full of character, these cats will bring a smile to the face of whoever receives them. These manju are also sure to draw questions about your trip.
The intent gaze of an artisan. The eyes and whiskers on every cat’s face and other details are done by hand, one after another.
Made with a combination of eastern and western ingredients, the five types—white, black, calico, stripes, and Russian blue—all have different skins and different bean paste fillings.
On a busy day, they prepare over 500 Maneki Neko manju alone.
